Our commitment to greater sustainability

Conserving resources, saving costs, and securing the future – this is the guiding principle of environmental policy to which we, at the BDBOS, are committed. With our environmental management approach, we aim to ensure that our federal institution acts as sustainably as possible, and thus contribute to the fulfilment of climate targets. Here we have summarised what we are doing in this area.

Implementing the Paris climate protection targets is considered a top priority for the German government. The 17 Global Sustainability Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda form the necessary guideline for political action.

Going forward, the role model effect adopted by the federal administration will, therefore, become more prominent. The Federal Climate Protection Act and the Climate Protection Programme 2030 aim to ensure that the federal administration achieves climate neutrality by 2030, rather than 2050. In order to achieve this goal, the federal government adopted the Sustainability Action Programme in 2021, which is subject to ongoing development and implementation efforts.

All federal authorities, including us, are required to implement suitable measures, in order to fulfil these goals.

Environmental management at the BDBOS

We have established our own environmental management system at BDBOS for this purpose. This reviews all operational processes, services and products in terms of their impact on the environment and climate. This includes, in particular, energy and water consumption, emissions, waste and the useful life of products, as well as the individual influence our employees can exert.

Our environmental management function identifies areas for implementing the sustainability strategy and coordinates, standardises and controls the process by which we develop measures aimed at achieving the goals set within our federal agency.

In this context, we are also working on implementing the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) at BDBOS. This globally recognised European environmental management system is intended to underpin our own alignment with a sustainable future, and ensure that all environmental aspects – be they exhaust gas or zero waste – are implemented in a legally compliant and transparent manner.

Our goal: to evaluate resources and costs more ecologically, to make an effective contribution to environmental protection, to assume social responsibility – including for future generations – to continuously act more sustainably and to constantly optimise our performance for the benefit of the environment.
