BDBOS requests frequencies in the 450 MHz range for security and rescue services

Date 16/07/2018

In order to be able to expand Public Safety Digital Radio with high-performance data services in the future, the BDBOS is applying to use 2x10 MHz in the 450 MHz range. Together with the frequencies already available in the 700 MHz range, this could ensure sufficient coverage for security and rescue forces in Germany. The requirements are currently being coordinated within the federal government.

Both the Conference of Minister Presidents (of the Federal States) and the Federal Government's Digital Agenda recognise the need to provide sufficient frequency spectrum for internal security. National and international studies confirm the need for public safety authorities and organisations to be able to meet the requirements of security and rescue forces.

Most recently, 2x5 and 2x3 MHz in the 700 MHz range were released for use by the public safety authorities and organisations. The frequency ranges are in the non-harmonised range and are subject to further restrictions due to neighbouring allocations, meaning that they cannot ultimately be used by the public safety authorities and organisations to the extent required. For this reason, the continued exclusive provision of frequencies in the 450 MHz range is of great importance. It will enable security and rescue forces to use important services and functions for communication in their operations in the future in order to fulfil their mission of helping citizens.
