Through the operation of Public Safety Digital Radio, the BDBOS enables the emergency service personnel of police forces, fire brigades, rescue services and disaster and civil defence authorities at federal and state level, as well as parts of the German Armed Forces, to use joint, high-performance and highly secure mobile communications during operations. Together with the federal and state governments, the BDBOS is continuously developing digital radio.

As part of this process, the 5,000th base station was added to the Public Safety Digital Radio Network in the municipality of Gochsheim in the district of Schweinfurt in April 2023. This milestone is an important cog in the overall machine of Public Safety Digital Radio, helping to stabilise and expand the network.

The number of base stations originally planned for Public Safety Digital Radio has now almost doubled. The 5,000th base station is thus also a commitment by the BDBOS and its partners at federal and state level to expand and further improve Public Safety Digital Radio in the future – and thus to provide security and rescue forces with a reliable means of communication in the field at all times.

Public Safety Digital Radio enables nationwide and cross-organisational communication and thus simplifies the deployment of operations – not only in everyday life, but especially in complex crisis and disaster situations. This means that Public Safety Digital Radio helps to provide faster and more reliable assistance for all citizens. Both the Public Safety Digital Radio Network and the associated mission-critical services and applications are constantly being further developed through close coordination between the federal and state governments. With over 1.1 million registered terminals, the Public Safety Digital Radio Network is the world's largest radio network based on the international TETRA standard and covers 99.2% of Germany with a network availability of more than 99.97%.
