The BDBOS is the federal government's network operator. With Public Safety Digital Radio, the world's largest TETRA network, it provides security and rescue forces throughout Germany with a highly secure and reliable means of mission-critical communication around the clock. More than one million terminals are registered in the radio network, with over 5,000 base stations covering 99.2 % of Germany.

The Public Safety Digital Radio Network was originally designed for voice and narrowband data communication. With the technical progress in the field of mobile communications, the operational and tactical requirements for modern public safety communication are also increasing.

An awareness campaign with the slogan “Digital radio saves lives” was launched to highlight the performance of the Public Safety Digital Radio Network and its importance for general safety to the general public – but also to emphasise the need for its further development into a public safety broadband network. The clear message is that lives really do depend on the security and high availability of our emergency services' communications.

Testimonials for the campaign were provided by emergency service personnel from the German Federal Police, the Berlin Police, the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief, the St John Accident Assistance, the Malteser Hilfsdienst, a volunteer fire brigade from Saarland and the German Life Saving Association.

The campaign motifs will be displayed from 11 to 31 March 2024 in the form of posters and video sequences in Berlin's government district. The motifs can be seen on analogue advertising spaces until 18 March and on digital advertising media until 31 March. Postcards with the same images and so-called sharepics for publication on social media with the hashtag #DigitalfunkRettetLeben (#DigitalRadioSavesLives) complement the poster campaign. All images and formats are available for download on this topic page.

We would like to thank the participating public safety organisations for their support as well as the emergency service personnel themselves, who made the campaign possible with their special assignment as photo models.
